Sorry, folks. I’m having trouble finding the cord that connects our camera to the computer. I’ll resume normal posting as soon as I find it. Hopefully tomorrow.
Month: April 2010
UPDATE: I just realized that there are a few slightly *um* nude drawings present in this link. Nothing really explicit but I thought I’d throw up the warning. Parents please review first! Sorry about that.
Quick! Stop everything and read every single post on this blog!
If you are an aspiring illustrator, cartoonist, animator, etc. this blog is stuffed to the top with invaluable advice. (Riley, you will love this I think.)
Quick composition sketches
These certainly aren’t going to pass as drawings but I thought I’d share them. These are some rough sketches I’m doing on my iphone to use later for reference for actual drawings. Mostly they’re just ideas for compositions.
What’s wrong/right with this picture?
Carl Barks is one of my favorite artists and storytellers. See how two different cartoonists adapted some of his rough sketches. One is better than the other. Can you tell which and more importantly why?

Vanishing Point
Today I’m trying to stretch myself a bit. I think most people love character studies. There’s just something so much more fun about drawing a face. But I really want to get better at full scenes.
I’m not crazy about today’s effort, but it’s a start. Too many lines for my taste.
On another note, today marks my 20th ODAD. I haven’t managed to do one every day, but I’m still happy with the progress.
Something intense…
Bogey
So today’s ODAD is drawn from one of my favorite actors, Humphrey Bogart. Compare yesterday’s drawing with this one and check out the difference when drawing from a reference image.
Also, I might stay in the “Film Noir” genre for a while. The black and white images work really well with pen and ink.
In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a huge fan of Pen and Ink. I’m also a huge fan of adventure comics. So imagine my delight in discovering Terry and the Pirates. I came across a few panels in a favorite book of mine and I was floored. I immediately ran down to the used book shop and, lo and behold, a gorgeous volume was sitting on the shelf–on sale no less! If I could write a comic strip, this is the strip I would write. Check this out:
And the storytelling is top-notch. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have discovered this strip.
Nerd boy, out!
