gettin back into it

Where have I been? I finished my second sketch book and then took a long breather for some reason… Oh, now I remember. I binge watched the entire season 5 of Pretty Little Liars, which is the worst show ever. So so bad.  Don’t ask me why I just watched it all. I can’t answer that.

Anyways, starting a new sketchbook. I loooooove this mid-tone paper. So  much fun to draw on.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – Inked

I finally got around to inking this. It took me a bit longer than I thought. I really wanted to capture that third tone other than black and white so I added a blue marker. I’m glad I did.

I did the rest with my Winsdor & Newton brush and ink.

One blatant failure here was my ability to capture a good likeness of the actors. It takes a lot of work and attention to really capture that and I honestly didn’t have the patience for it on this one. But just to clear up confusion: that’s Dumbledore, Harry, Ron (not Snape), and Hermonie, right to left.

Gustave Doré

Growing up, I feel like we had an edition of the Bible with Gustave Doré’s illustrations. I remember loving these illustrations as a youngster (probably partially because of the nekke’d people. Scandal!) but also they were so detailed and beautiful. Revisiting them now they create a weird combination of nostalgia and awe in me. Doré was an amazing artist; a master of black and white composition.

Check out his illustrations for Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven. It’s like something out of Maxfield Parrish’s nightmares.
